My sub projectReply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Search for other posts by Report to Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

Well Yesterday was a good day I got all of the holes for my sub boxes cut out and all the pieces sanded. today I tore apart the interior and found a very disappointing sight, I have a roughly inch by 3 inch rust hole in my driver side wheel well I am a little angry but its just a minor setback. I will post pics tomorrow of before and after body work as well as my boxes.

This car is lucky I love it so much, hell its lucky that I am planning on restoring it cuz if I wasnt I probably would have just put everything back together and said screw it but come on it is an 83 and I cant expect everything to go as planned. Besides that I think we all can agree rotaries are some of, if not the most, fun cars to drive. so even though I may look at today as a step back once she is done it will all be worth it.

Fix that rust! If it spreads your upper suspension link can rip out. My RX-7's been parked for a couple of years now because it's threatening to tear loose.

The only way to really fix that is to cut it out and weld in new metal.

Flyboy, I know that the best way would have been to weld new steel in the place but I dont have a welder so I had to use what I had.

From the previous post you can see I screwed in a piece of screened steel. after that I used bondo long haired fiberglass body filler to fill it in. I then ran a thin layer of bondo over the outside portion to smooth it out a little, primed and painted both inside and out, and finally I sprayed it with underbody spray which is rubber based. I went overkill with the fiberglass to make sure it would be strong and hold up. I know its probably not a permanant fix but honestly nothing is rust will take over anything. anyway here are the pics.

I did also get a box mostly built and I have the inside sealed I just need to predrill the sub bolt holes before I prime and paint it. I used 3/4" mdf board and I got T clips for the sub wire to plug into which you can see the hole for that on the side of the box.

That is all for me today. tomorrow I can take my car off the jacks and finish the project. I will continue to show pics as I go along. Time for a beer

Spyride, the boxes are small but they are going under where my storage bins were. I had to make them small. I used the hidden sub demensions from this site but modified them slightly to get more of an angle pointing towards the seat. I will be hooking everything up today and testing it. I hope it doesnt dim my headlights, however, if it does I will just get a capacitor. will be posting pics today and later this week once everything is completely finished.

This may be off subject but another thing I did was take apart the driver side power window button and clean it again. it was becoming bad and not working all the time. The switch was just a little dirty but clean and good as new now.

The speaker box dimensions are on the small side, but they fit under the bins - stealth is the best theft deterrent. Mounting the speaker over the top of the lid instead of under (like Zach did) makes a noticeable difference.

Cleaning the switches works good for about a year or so, then you have to do it again. Luckily it's easy to do.

^agreed, I had to do this when I got the car. I haven't drove it daily since I got it until this summer. yet, once again I had to clean the switches. very easy and effective if only for a short time.

Everything is done. I put the interior back together and wired everything in about an hour and a half trying to beat the 90 degree heat. sounds great and took it on a long drive. everything is solid. I will be posting a picture tuesday of the black cage I am putting over the amp.

And on at night

Yep. I think that was the most popular advice I ever wrote up. I'm glad I posted it.
