I have a 1983 first gen rx-7. About 7 or 8 years ago I installed a replacement engine from Hayes Rotary and a Bonez cat and a new muffler from rotary performance. From that date on I put only a few thousand miles a year on the car and passed emissions every year. Life was good.
The last time I took it out it had sat for 6 months or so and I fired it up to take a short ride. On the way the engine suddenly started to bog down and I lost power. The I see sparks shooting out the back from the muffler. I pull over and the whole exhaust system is glowing bright red. I get it towed home and pull the cat off and sure enough it had a huge hole melted in the center. I assumed the cat failed and clogged the muffler leading to the lack of power and glowing exhaust system.
So a few weeks back, I bought another Bonez cat from Rotary Perfromance and a muffler from racing beat and put them back on the car thinking that would be it. I took the car out for a test drive and lo and behold the car won't run right. It is almost like it is bogging down half the time before it finally acts like it it will run right and then kind of bogs back down again. Suddenly the exhaust over heat light comes on. I go around back and see small bits of the catalytic converter coming out of the exhaust again.
So....I am at a loss. It seems to me like something else is wrong with the car. That whatever went wrong killed my first cat and most likely has now killed a brand new cat. What could it be? Any ideas?
