building new intake for engineReply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Search for other posts by Report to Moderator        IP Address Go to the top of this page

hello everyone.
ive been out of the rotary world for a little while. fixing to get back in. put my engine back on the engine stand today and am fixing to work out some of the issues and some things i disliked about my last setup. let me tell you what my current setup is and then what i plan to do.

by the way, the carb forum isnt very active.

current setup:

4 port 13 bt longblock (stock ports)
jay tech intake manifold
600 cfm holley DP (mechanical sec.)
factory turbo from anm 89 turbo II (i think!)

*turbo is blowing through the carb*

dizzy out of an 12A
3 mallory hyfire ignition boxes (1 for each leading plug, 1 for trailing)
3 msd blaster ss coils

plus all the coresponding junk for the fuel system , etc, etc

had all this running in a 2nd gen that i ran solo II.

set up was wicked fast and always put a smile on my face. took a long time to sort out the bugs and get it running right though (mostly all ignition problems). a lot of people on this forum helped me out when i was pretty much a newbie to rotary's.

i plan on re doing the ignition system with better boxes that will retard with boost. thats too easy, just spend the money on the right parts. but what i really want to do is remote mount the turbo from under the hood and get the holley turned the right way under the hood to help with throttle linkage issues, fuel line issues, heat from the exhaust, and general looks.

been wrapping my head around building a new intake manifold for a long time and even though i have fabricated a lot of the parts under my hood, i dont think im a good enough welder to make this manifold.

ive read several posts about intakes and carbs. some of it i would say is true, some of it i think is garbage.

does anyone have any thoughs about either running a open plenum intake under the holley (remember its boosted), or a dual plenum (i think thats the right word), where the primary's would see one intake runner under the carb and then split into two and the same for the secondaries?

im in no hurry and have nothing but time on this project, but i would love to hear others thoughts on this.

My 12A half-bridge is set up with dual Weber 36DCDs. The primary barrels of the carburetor feed the street-ported center ports while the secondary barrels feed the bridge-ported outer ports. I think separating the front and back barrels of the Holley is a good idea if the engine is ported for it. When I launch the car I push the pedal down to where the secondaries kick in. Once I'm over 3000rpm I ease the pedal all the way down. It's a rush! I can imagine with a turbo it would be even better.

how you doing flyboy

ive got two thoughts. the first is two have two runners under the carb. one runner would see one primary and one secondary port on the carb. my goal with this is too boost vacuum signal on the primaries. then the one runner would split to two and down to the corresponding intake position.

the other is to have two runners under the carb. one seeing two primary ports and the other seeing two secondary ports. the intake runners under the primaries would be smaller then what i previosly have to increase vacuum signal on the primaries.

My intake has a separate runner for each barrel of each carburetor. It runs fine and has plenty of vacuum. Based on that I would think that your second option would be better, but I'm no engineer or carb tinkerer.
